And I have a question already. Ive been a fan for awhile now, but just recently stumbled upon something interesting. I've been on an R.E.M. listening binge lately and was on a fan site of theirs when I ran across this:
http://www.flim.com/remlafaq/oot/meinhoney.html . I've been addicted to Out Of Time especially and found that interesting. In case the link does not work, Me In Honey was written as a response to 10,000 Maniac's Eat For Two? Ive read both sets of lyrics and while there is a similarity in subject matter, I still dont get it. Am I dense or what? Does anybody know anything about this? Im intrigued now..lol. Ill post the links for both lyrics for you in case they are needed. 1st: REM-Me In Honey http://www.retroweb.com/rem/lyrics/song_MeInHoney.html

Sorry if this one has been brought up before, but I'm under the impression that once Natalie left the Maniacs, people stopped following them, and focused more on her.

That said, what's going on with the actual 10,000 Manaics now? I know Mary left (which is a shame, I really liked those 2 albums) and they now have Oskar Saville, but are they just doing the club scene now, or are there plans for an album any time soon?

Granted Robert Buck passed away, which might have put a big kink in their productivity, but that was some time ago, and the band has since regrouped.

Just kinda wondering...

Merchant Brings the Hits
R.E.M., Bragg, Chieftans appear on rarities CD

The highlights of Natalie Merchant's decade-long solo career will be culled into the September 27th release Natalie Merchant's Greatest Hits. Rhino Records will make the compilation available in a thirteen-track single CD, as well as a two-CD set featuring a bonus disc of rarities -- including collaborations with R.E.M., the Chieftains and Billy Bragg.
"Assembling this compilation gave me the opportunity to stop and look back at my progress through over ten years of recordings," says the former 10,000 Maniacs frontwoman. "I'm grateful for this period of retrospection . . . I tend to remember the events in my life and the people who have participated in them through the context of album cycles: writing, recording and performing. They're my little epochs."

The package includes a pair of tracks, "Sally Ann" and "Owensboro," from Merchant's most recent album, 2003's The House Carpenter's Daughter, released on her own Myth America label.

Natalie Merchant's Greatest Hits track listing:

Disc One:

Wonder
Carnival
Jealousy (Single Version)
San Andreas Fault
Kind & Generous
Break Your Heart
Life Is Sweet
The Living
Build a Levee
Not in This Life
Motherland
Owensboro
Sally Ann

Disc Two:

She Devil
Cowboy Romance
Children Go Where I Send Thee
Birds and Ships (with Billy Bragg)
The Lowlands of Holland (with the Chieftans)
One Fine Day
Photograph (with R.E.M.)
Party of God (with Billy Bragg)
Thick as Thieves (2005 Version)
Bread and Circuses (with Billy Bragg)
Because I Could Not Stop for Death (with Susan McKeown)
Tell Yourself
But Not for Me
I Know How to Do It
Come Take a Trip in My Airship

Man, I never realised how beautiful "Verdi Cries" was before. I kind of just brushed it aside until today, when I was listening to In My Tribe on headphones. By the way, that record is simply unbearable on the headphones. The over-production really shows. It's very tinny with too much treble, it sounds like. I prefer blasting it in my car or in my room. Headphones, no way. Gave me a headache. Anyone else agree with me?

DUDE. Wow. If y'all haven't yet, I highly recommend snagging the infamous "Boston Heckler" Headstrong performance from '89. It's unbelievable... and Natalie SCREAMS. Seriously. Check it out.

Eee. I just scored a copy of Secrets of the I Ching for under $20 plus shipping. Eeeee. And it's one of the original American pressings. It was distributed by Landslide Records in Atlanta, and I recall reading something about that somewhere... So no, it's not the Chinese Chicken one or the bootleg one. This is the real deal, probably straight out of Fredonia. Eeee. Does anyone know how much these can go for? I think I just got lucky, 'cause the bid started at 99 cents. The guy didn't know what it was, obviously. Eeee.

As per billboard.com:

Natalie Merchant is recording an undetermined number of new songs for
forthcoming two-disc Warner Bros. compilation of her solo work. "The
deadline is mid-July, so I should expect it to be released in the early fall
" she writes on her official Web site.

The artist is also designing the packaging for the set. In addition to such
well-known songs as "Jealousy" and "Carnival," also expected are B-sides,
live recordings and songs Merchant has contributed to various benefit albums
over the years.

Since leaving the major-label world, the former 10,000 Maniacs singer has
taken a low-key approach to career, releasing "The House Carpenter's
Daughter" in 2003 on her own Myth America label and devoting her energies to
motherhood. Beyond the month-long outing launched in support of that release
Merchant says she has no plans for hitting the road anytime soon. "Touring
with a baby is a bit more complicated and exhausting (for everyone)," she
writes on the site. "So I have to be realistic."

A few months ago, around the time the community was created, diver_boy made a comment regarding a 10,000 Maniacs 25th anniversary convention in Jamestown... I was wondering if he could make any remarks regarding his plans... I'm very intrigued.

In other news, I have successfully brainwashed managed to get five or so friends to start listening to 10,000 Maniacs. Woot!

In other other news, does anyone here like John & Mary? (Lombardo and Ramsey, respectively.) I personally think they're better than post-Natalie Maniacs... Of course...

Natalie Maniacs > all. :B

Also, I made a mix of my personal favourite Maniacs (82-93) songs for my art teacher... if you're interested, here's the track listing:

1. My Mother the War
2. Hey Jack Kerouac
3. Candy Everybody Wants
4. Please Forgive Us
5. Daktari
6. Because the Night
7. Don't Talk
8. Headstrong
9. Planned Obsolescence
10. Eden
11. Stockton Gala Days (unplugged version)
12. Everyone A Puzzle Lover
13. The Lion's Share
14. Like the Weather
15. Grey Victory
16. These Are Days

Personally, some of these aren't my all-time favourites... like "These Are Days." It's a terrific song, and while it's pop-friendly enough for people to get into, it's most certainly not the number one Maniacs song ever. It's up there, though. However, I *love* everyone of these songs to death.

Let's see some activity here, folks!

Welp. Seeing as there's an unhealthy lack of activity here...

I'd just like to mention that I added to my 10,000 Maniacs catalogue today. I bought a copy of MTV Unplugged used. It was kind of shaky at first, but it got better. Natalie either sounded completely unenthusiastic or just blew me away. @_@

Another addition to my Maniacs catalogue was receiving the sound file for my dearly beloved "Planned Obsolescence," which I had first heard on Natalie's website. Kickass song.

So, that brings me to five 10km full lengths...

- The Wishing Chair
- In My Tribe
- Blind Man's Zoo
- Our Time in Eden
- MTV Unplugged

I want Hope Chest, but I'd really love original LPs of Human Conflict Number Five and Secrets of the I Ching. Do any of you guys have either of those LPs? Let me know what they're like and how they compare to what mixes are on Hope Chest.

Your Mod,

MAY 15 CONCERT TO HONOR PETE SEEGERthe concert of the year! :)

Natalie has been invited to perform in a concert that will pay tribute to the legendary folk musician/political activist Pete Seeger and celebrate the release of his autobiography. The folk music magazine "Sing Out" is organizing the event on May 15 at the Keswick Theatre in Glenside, PA where Pete Seeger will be performing along with various luminaries of the American folk music scene (Bruce Cockburn, Janis Ian, Odetta and Judy Collins). For more information, visit the Sing Out website.

FOR THE LADY
Natalie has contributed the song, "Motherland" to a CD to benefit USA Campaign for Burma. All proceeds are being contributed to their efforts to end the house arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi (leader of the Burmese democracy movement and the only jailed recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize). read more hereCollapse )

AILEEN WUORNOS DOCUMENTARY (heard it was really good...)
Some explanation seems necessary to explain why a documentary film about the nation's most notorious female serial killer (subject for the Hollywood film, "Monster") would feature a song by Natalie Merchant in its closing credits. Merchant explains, "When director Nick Broomfield sent a working edit of the film, I was so disturbed by the subject matter that I couldn't even watch it. Aileen Wuornos led a tortured, torturing life that is beyond my worst nightmares. It wasn't until I was told that Aileen spent many hours listening to my album "Tigerlily" while on death row and requested "Carnival" be played at her funeral that I gave permission for the use of the song. It's very odd to think of the places my music can go once it leaves my hands. If it gave her some solace, I have to be grateful."

CLEAR PATH INTERNATIONAL
Natalie has contributed the song "This House is on Fire" to a benefit CD for the human rights group Clear Path International which will be released in April 2005. Clear Path International is a human rights group working with landmine and bomb victims in Vietnam, Cambodia and on the Thai-Burma border. read more about it hereCollapse )

RED WHITE & BLUE: A TALE OF TWO AMERICAS
Natalie's song, "Motherland" will be featured in the opening credits to a new documentary by directors Eric Anderson and Amelia Dello to be released in September 2005. The idea behind Red, White & Blue is to test the veracity of today's "red states versus blue states" mentality by asking Americans from all walks of life a series of questions, and presenting their answers in a documentary film. read more about it hereCollapse )

PUTUMAYO FOLK COMPILATION
Putumayo Records is working on a compilation album called American Folk scheduled for release in July 2005. Natalie's song, "Owensboro" from her album The House Carpenter's Daughter will be included. Other artists on the compilation will be; Tracy Chapman, Martin Sexton, Peter Mulvey, Suzanne Vega, Lucinda Williams and Josh Ritter. For more information, go to putumayo.com

I believe that is all I have to report to date.
